How to teach your dog to wait

Wait at a car

Wait is one of the impulse control behaviors that we like to teach every dog.

We frequently are asked what the difference is between "wait" and "stay." Click here for Whole Dog Journal's article on the difference.

The Plan

Wait is useful for so many things. We like to think of it as a hold or a pause. For example, you open your fence to take your dog out for a walk. Cue "wait" just before you open to have your pup stay in his current position until you release him with "okay." This is especially helpful for dogs with fear/reactivity issues. It allows you to make sure the coast is clear before leaving the yard.
